1826 – Peter Reid’s MS (R)

NLS ms 22118. Untitled, but inscribed Peter Reid Glasgow 1826.

This manuscript contains 46 tunes and is bound with a third edition (1822) of Donald MacDonald’s published collection. It does not repeat any tune from that book. Also bound in is a manuscript collection of poems and song texts which refers to MacDonald’s book (folio 42v).

Peter Reid is said to have been a good amateur player and to have judged frequently at the annual pibroch competition in Edinburgh. When he wrote the manuscript, he seems to have been a young man, having a business position in Glasgow. Several of the tunes have a note indicating that they were played by a particular piper to win a competition, and one of them is Donald MacDonald, who won the prize pipe in 1817.

Reid was born in Campbeltown on 8 December 1801 and was possibly a student of MacDonald between 1814 and 1816, when MacDonald was living there. When Reid came to Leith, he may have continued his association with MacDonald, who had moved to Edinburgh by the summer of 1817, but it is also clear from the manuscript that he was friendly with the MacCrummon family. In particular, with Malcolm MacCrummon, who had business in and legal ties to Leith, and his son Donald, who started his own kelp and chemical processing concern there.

NOTE. The folio sequence in the above PDFs is inaccurate – this will be rectified when I next consult the MS or receive accurate folio information. Previously, R.34 and R.35 were treated as the same tune; I separated them in the lists below on 4 August 2015. As Reid does not give tune numbers, these are editorial. References are in the form [Source].[editorial tune no.]: [folio no.]
